Building With Hemp Workshop

In conjunction with Hemp History Week, North Limestone Community Development Corporation (NoLi CDC) will be hosting a Building With Hemp Workshop on June 9 & 10 at 168 York Street in Lexington, KY. This workshop is being organized in partnership with KYHIA, KY Hemp Research Foundation, CV Sciences, and many other partners, sponsors and supporters.

The Building with Hemp workshop will be a two-day workshop to engage participants to learn about and mix/place hempcrete insulation in a new shotgun-style house being built at 168 York Street. The registration for that can be found at this Eventbrite page.

This will be the first house in Kentucky insulated with hemp, and, perhaps more exciting, will use Kentucky-grown and processed hemp, being supplied by Sunstrand, a Louisville KY processor. The lime is being supplied by American Lime Technology. NoLi CDC is the Developer and Designer of the hemp shotgun at 168 York Street, and Crawford Builders is the General Contractor.

Hempcrete is a process by which ground-up stems from the hemp plant (known as hemp hurd) are mixed with lime and water, and placed into forms similar to the way concrete is placed – the forms are removed once the hempcrete is dry and set up. The end result is a solid, rigid, highly-insulative material (R-2.4 per inch) that is hypoallergenic, fire- and insect-resistant, has significant thermal mass, and is vapor-permeable.

The funding for this house is made possible by both grant and construction loan from the LFUCG Affordable Housing Trust Fund, as well as a construction line-of-credit from the Knight Foundation and a grant from ArtPlace America for the initial purchase of the land.
